A monoprint is a unique work of art made by printing, by hand, in a way that can only produce a one-off image.

My recent body of work is a series of monoprints made from polymer gravure plates which are printed together, in a multi plate technique, layered and super-imposed. The plates are made from mostly photographic images that I have collected over the years, which hold an intuitive but mysterious interest to me. They are made in a set size, 20 cm square, that can be overlaid in infinite different combinations.

I make use of inking the plates in particular parts, rolling over with inks and using offsets of other images that are transferred to the rollers.

The Monoprinting technique puts time limits on the production which must be finished before the paper and ink dries.

These constraints necessitate a spontaneous working practice, as there is little time for rational decision making, bringing into play automatic skills from the subconscious. Using surrealist concepts of automatic creativity fosters the elements of chance, accident and instinct. Summoning new forms and narratives from the subconscious, the creative process becomes a discourse between the irrational world and the intuitive construction of a visual language.

And it makes me happy.
